Kovalam Beach
This is a beach town which is situated on the Arabian Sea in South India. This beach town is located just 16 km outside Trivandrum and hence it is located in the Trivandrum district. Beaches can be found in Kovalam as well as around the town. Situated at just 3 km away from this beach town is Vizhinjam, a sea port, which is famous for its big churches, mosque, old Hindu temples and some special varieties of fish. During the hippy era, this beach town as one of the most prominent spots for tourists in India, and till now it still as famous.
Kovalam is visited mostly by tourists from various parts of Israel and Europe. This beach town also offers regeneration resorts, Ayurvedic salons and other institutions which offer Ayurvedic treatments to the visitors. Kovalam has three beaches which are separated by outcrops. The largest beach in Kovalam is called Light House Beach and the most popular attraction here is the 30 meters high light house. Hawah Beach is the second largest of the three beaches here and this beach is thronged by topless European women and is considered as India’s first topless beach. If you want to go for topless sunbathing or parading then visit private coves which are owned by resorts because these practices are banned in places other than these. These two beaches are very popular among tourists. The third beach here is called Samudra Beach, it does have a lot of tourists and mostly fishermen ply this area.
The sands on the beaches here are partly black in color because of the presence of thorazite and ilmenite. Normally tourists like to visit Kovalam during the period from November to March. Kovalam is internationally famous and people come here to spend their vacation in the midst of sandy, stony beaches and the calm blue waters of the sea.
