Education has always played a very important role in Kerala society. Traditional education was of various types. The sabha mathams imparted Vedic knowledge, the Kalaris taught youngsters martial arts and the village schools were run by teachers or gurus known as Asans or Ezhuthachans.
Modern day education is however different from the traditional set up. Kerala has many schools across the state. Some of these schools are wholly managed and run by the government. There are other schools that are known as “Aided schools.” These schools are managed by private trusts or communities but according to the guidelines laid down by the government. The colleges that impart education at the graduate and post graduate levels are affiliated to any one of the three main universities in the state.
